This was posted by someone I know and am connected to on Facebook. Leaving aside why I am still connected to this person (she used to work for me), I have taken note of her persistence in supporting whatever this president, republicans and other “conservatives” do, even in the face of all the lies and misadventures they are involved in. She hates immigration and immigrants and loves what she hears on Fox News. I shake my head at all of this foolishness, but keep reading her posts – one of my (real) friends said that I’m taking an anthropological curiosity from it. I think he’s right.
But this week she posted the line above. She took it – like always – from someone else’s post, as it was followed by one of those “let’s see who is brave enough to repost this,” or something like that. This post stopped me in my tracks and while I never (never!) comment on her posts, my fingers hovered over the keyboard this time. What would lead someone to believe that it would be helpful to disqualify an entire group of people because of their religion?
Would she like everyone in the USA to be Christian? What type of Christian, by the way? Is it okay to be catholic? Should all the jews be sent somewhere else and their temples also taken down? Maybe this is just a shot at muslims. Christianity is the most popular religion in the world (29% of the population) but its closely followed by Islam with 26% and Hindus at 15%. Maybe if you watch enough Fox News you start to believe that Islam is the world’s worst influence and it is the muslims in the world who are most responsible for the world’s ill – Palestinians? Iranians? – aren’t they all to blame?
I am disgusted by this thinking. It is the kind of thinking that led Americans to sponsor slavery, to persecute native americans and for the Germans to believe that theirs is the superior race almost 100 years ago. This is a dangerous and slipper slope my old (not)friend. That’s what I would say if I thought it would be heard.
